Biografía
Blessed Ferran Castán Messeguer, also known as Ferran Castán, was a member of the Claretians and one of the many courageous individuals who suffered martyrdom during the Spanish Civil War. Born on 1 April 1915 in the town of Fonz, Huesca, Spain, he grew up in a devout Catholic family. As a young man, Ferran felt called to serve God and joined the Claretian missionary congregation, known for its commitment to spreading the Gospel and proclaiming the message of Jesus Christ.
During this turbulent period in Spanish history, religious persecution was rampant, and many religious individuals, including priests and religious brothers, were targeted for their faith. Ferran Castán, along with his Claretian companions, was fully aware of the risks they faced but remained steadfast in their commitment to their religious calling.
Tragically, Ferran met his untimely death at the age of 21 on 19 October 1936. He was martyred at Mas Claret, located in Sant Pere dels Arquells, Lleida, Spain, where he was stationed. The circumstances surrounding his martyrdom remain a testament to his unwavering faith and loyalty to his religious vocation, even in the face of grave danger.
Recognizing his sacrifice, Pope Francis declared Ferran Castán Messeguer as venerable on 21 December 2016, by virtue of a decree of martyrdom. Further honoring his memory and sanctity, Pope Francis beatified him on 21 October 2017, in a celebratory ceremony held at the renowned Basilica of Sagrada Familia in Barcelona, Spain. The beatification Mass was presided over by Archbishop Angelo Amato, a prominent figure in the Congregation for the Causes of Saints.
Blessed Ferran Castán Messeguer's feast days are commemorated on 19 October, the day of his martyrdom, as well as on 1 February as one of the 109 Spanish Claretian Martyrs who suffered during the Spanish Civil War. His life serves as an inspiration to all who seek to follow Christ wholeheartedly and remain steadfast in their faith, even amidst adversity and persecution.
