Beato Francisco Paoli

Blessed Francesco Paoli, also known as Angelo Paoli and affectionately called the "Father of the Poor," was born on 1 September 1642 in Argigliano, Casola in Lunigiana, Italy. He came from a devout family, being the son of Angelo Paoli and Santa Morelli. From a young age, Francesco exhibited a deep devotion to his faith and a strong desire to serve others.

As a young man, Francesco dedicated his spare time to teaching catechism to impoverished children in Argigliano. His love for helping the poor and his desire to spread the teachings of the Catholic Church led him to join the Calced Carmelites in Siena, Italy at the tender age of 18. He became a novice and embraced the Carmelite way of life, known for its solitude, contemplation, and devout observance of the Rule of St. Albert.

Francesco's commitment to the Carmelite Order led him to profess as a priest in the Carmelites of the Ancient Observance. Throughout his life, he was assigned to various Carmelite communities, including Pisa, Cupoli, Poggio Catino, and Fivizzano, all in Italy. One of the notable aspects of Francesco's ministry was his unwavering charity towards the poor. He dedicated himself to the service of those less fortunate, providing them with essential support and care.

Driven by his deep personal devotion to the Passion of Christ, Blessed Francesco Paoli erected wooden crosses on the hills surrounding Fivizzano. It was his hope that these crosses would inspire people to reflect on the Crucifixion and draw closer to God. In addition to the crosses in Fivizzano, Francesco also erected a wooden cross in the historic Coliseum in Rome, Italy. Through this act, he sought to remind people of the great sacrifice of Jesus Christ and the importance of His redemptive work.

In 1687, Francesco was assigned to the Convent of Saint Martin in Rome, where he served as the novice master. During his time in Rome, he also dedicated himself to caring for the sick poor in the hospitals of the city. Francesco's compassion and care for the sick earned him a reputation as a miracle worker. His intercession and prayers were known to bring about remarkable healings and spiritual consolation to those in need.

Blessed Francesco Paoli's humble and selfless life of service deeply touched the hearts of many, and his virtuous reputation continued to grow. His heroic virtues were officially recognized on 21 January 1781 by Pope Pius VI, who declared him venerable. Centuries later, on 18 April 2010, Pope Benedict XVI beatified Francesco Paoli, acknowledging his sanctity and the special grace he brought to the Church. The recognition Mass was scheduled to be celebrated at the Basilica of Saint John Lateran in Rome, Italy, by Cardinal Agostino Vallini.

Blessed Francesco Paoli's legacy lives on as a shining example of love, compassion, and devotion to God and neighbor. He remains an inspiration to all those who seek to follow Christ and dedicate their lives to the service of others. On his feast day, 20 January, we commemorate his life and ask for his intercession for the poor, the sick, and those in need of spiritual guidance.
