Biografía

Blessed Francisco Pastor Garrido, also known as Father Vicente, was a Trappist priest and a martyr of the Spanish Civil War. He was born on 16 February 1905 in Valencia, Spain, and dedicated his life to serving God and the Church.

From an early age, Francisco showed a strong devotion to his faith and a deep desire to serve those in need. Following his calling, he entered the Trappist monastery of Santa Maria de la Huerta and took the religious name Father Vicente. The Trappists, known for their contemplative lifestyle and commitment to silence, provided Francisco with a suitable environment to cultivate his spiritual life.

As a Trappist monk, Father Vicente embraced a life characterized by prayer, simplicity, and self-sacrifice. He diligently observed the monastic Rule, striving for holiness and detachment from worldly possessions. Father Vicente's spiritual journey led him to a profound union with God, which he shared with his fellow brothers in the monastery.

However, the outbreak of the Spanish Civil War in 1936 posed a great threat to the Catholic Church and religious communities throughout Spain. Anti-Catholic sentiments were on the rise, and many priests and religious were targeted for their faith. Despite the dangers, Father Vicente remained steadfast in his commitment to Christ and his vocation.

Tragically, on 21 September 1936, Father Vicente was martyred in Cuesta de las Anguilas, Santander, Cantabria. He bravely refused to renounce his faith and remained faithful to his priestly duties until the end. His unwavering courage and resilience in the face of persecution stand as a testament to his deep love for Christ and the Church.

Recognizing his martyrdom, Pope Francis declared Father Vicente's martyrdom on 22 January 2015, bestowing upon him the title of Blessed. His beatification ceremony took place on 3 October 2015 at the Cathedral of Santander, Spain, with Cardinal Angelo Amato as the principal celebrant.

Blessed Francisco Pastor Garrido serves as an inspiration to all those who face adversity and persecution for their Catholic faith. His life and martyrdom remind us of the importance of remaining faithful and steadfast in the face of opposition. Let us pray to him for his intercession and guidance in our own spiritual journeys.
