Biografía

Blessed Franciscus Bang was a military officer in the Korean army and a layman martyr in the apostolic vicariate of Korea. He is celebrated as one of the Martyrs of Korea and his feast days are observed on January 21st and September 20th.

Born in Myeoncheon, Chungcheong-do, South Korea, little is known about the early life of Blessed Franciscus Bang. However, it is recorded that he was a dedicated soldier in the Korean army, serving his country faithfully.

During the time when Christianity had taken root in Korea but was heavily persecuted, Blessed Franciscus Bang encountered the Catholic faith and became a devoted follower. Despite the dangers and risks involved, he openly professed his faith and actively participated in the growth of the Catholic Church in Korea.

Blessed Franciscus Bang's unfaltering devotion to his faith eventually led to his martyrdom. On January 21, 1799, in the city of Hongju, Chungcheong-do, he was arrested due to his Christian beliefs. He endured intense persecution and imprisonment, facing severe torture and pressure to renounce his faith. However, he remained steadfast and unwavering in his commitment to Jesus Christ and the Catholic Church.

Finally, after enduring great suffering, Blessed Franciscus Bang was executed for his refusal to renounce his faith. He embraced his martyrdom with courage and died as a witness to his Christian beliefs. His sacrifice, along with many others during this period of persecution in Korea, serves as a testament to the strength and resilience of the early Korean Catholic Church and its followers.

Blessed Franciscus Bang was officially venerated by Pope Francis on February 7, 2014, through a decree on martyrdom. Later, on August 15, 2014, he was beatified by Pope Francis, recognizing his heroic virtue and martyrdom in defense of the Catholic faith.

Today, Blessed Franciscus Bang is remembered and honored as a symbol of faith and devotion among the Korean Catholic community. His life and sacrifice serve as an inspiration to all believers, reminding them of the importance of remaining steadfast in the face of adversity and persecution.
