Beato Franciscus Yi Bohyeon

Blessed Franciscus Yi Bohyeon, also known as Francis, was a remarkable layman convert who became one of the Martyrs of Korea. He was born in the year 1773 in Deoksan, Chungcheong-do, South Korea. Franciscus was known for his deep faith and unwavering commitment to his Catholic beliefs.

Little is known about the early years of Franciscus Yi Bohyeon's life, but it is evident that he underwent a profound spiritual transformation that led him to embrace the Catholic faith. During a time when Catholicism faced severe persecution in Korea, Franciscus became a beacon of hope and inspiration for his fellow believers.

Tragically, on 9 January 1800, in Haemi, Chungcheong-do, South Korea, Franciscus Yi Bohyeon was brutally beaten to death by the police. He became a martyr for his faith, sacrificing his life in defense of his Catholic beliefs.

Franciscus's martyrdom was highly regarded by the Catholic Church, and his memory was officially recognized and venerated on 7 February 2014 by Pope Francis, through a decree on martyrdom. The beatification ceremony took place on 15 August 2014, administered by Pope Francis himself, further confirming the Church's acknowledgement of Franciscus's exceptional holiness and sacrifice.

As a layman convert martyred for his faith in Korea, Blessed Franciscus Yi Bohyeon exemplifies the indomitable spirit and bravery of the Catholic Church even amidst persecution. His feast days are celebrated on 9 January, the day of his martyrdom, and also on 20 September, as one of the Martyrs of Korea, commemorating the collective sacrifice of the Korean martyrs who suffered for their faith.
