Biografía

Blessed Germán Martín Y Martín was born on 9 February 1899 in San Cristóbal de Priero, Oviedo, Spain. He entered the Salesian order and began his novitiate in Carabanchel Alto, Spain, where he showed a deep commitment to his religious vocation. After completing his novitiate, Germán made his religious profession in 1918.

In his pursuit of knowledge and spiritual growth, Germán embarked on a journey of education. He studied philosophy and education in various cities, including Carabanchel Alto, Barcelona, and Baracaldo. Equipped with the wisdom gained through his studies, Germán became a dedicated teacher and counselor.

In 1933, Father Germán began working at the San Miguel Arcángel School on the Paseo de Extremadura. He quickly became known for his profound spirituality, strict adherence to Salesian principles, and genuine care for his students. He had a unique ability to connect with the young, both academically and spiritually.

Tragically, with the outbreak of the Spanish Civil War, Father Germán and the other Salesians were forced to abandon their work and go into hiding. However, despite their efforts to remain concealed, Germán was seized at a boarding house in Madrid on 30 August 1936. The following day, he was executed for the "crime" of being a priest. His bravery and unwavering commitment to his faith exemplified the ultimate sacrifice.

Blessed Germán Martín Y Martín's life and martyrdom serve as an inspiration, reminding us of the profound courage and dedication demonstrated by those who suffer for their beliefs. On 26 June 2006, Pope Benedict XVI recognized his martyrdom through a decree, highlighting Germán's exceptional virtue. Blessed Germán was later beatified by Pope Benedict XVI on 28 October 2007.

His feast day is commemorated on 31 August, and on some calendars, it falls on 28 July. Through his selfless sacrifice and steadfast faith, Blessed Germán Martín Y Martín continues to inspire believers to uphold their convictions and persevere in the face of adversity.
