Beato Giles de Laurenzana

Blessed Giles of Laurenzana, also known as Giles di Bello, Bernardin, Bernardino, Egidio, and Egidius, was born on 1443 in Laurenzana, Italy as Bernardin de Bello. He was raised on a farm in Laurenzana, near Naples. From a young age, Giles showed a deep love and reverence for all creatures, particularly animals.

As Giles grew older, his devotion to the Catholic faith led him to join the Franciscan order as a lay brother. He resided in the Franciscan friary at Laurenzana, where he lived a life of simplicity and devoted himself to prayer and contemplation. As a hermit, Giles found solace in the garden surrounding the friary, where he communed with nature and found peace in the presence of God.

Giles became widely recognized for his extraordinary affinity towards animals. It is said that he possessed a unique ability to communicate with them, understanding their needs and offering them solace when distressed.
