Beato Giles de Santarém

Blessed Giles of Santarém, also known as Giles of Portugal, Giles of Santarem, Giles of Vauzela, Giles of Vouzela, Egigio, Egidius, or Gil, was born around 1185 in Vaozela, Portugal. He was the son of Rodrigo Pelayo Valladaris, the governor of Coimbra, Portugal, and a counselor to King Sancho I.

Although Giles came from a prestigious family that encouraged him to enter the priesthood, he did not share their enthusiasm at first. Instead, he pursued studies in medicine and necromancy. One of his biographers even claimed that Giles had made a blood-sign pact with the devil to gain knowledge and skills, although the veracity of this claim remains uncertain. According to the same biographer, Giles renounced this pact after encountering a spectral knight who appeared to him and commanded him to change his life.

Moved by this encounter, Giles returned to the Christian faith and went on to study theology in Paris, France. Eventually, he joined the Dominican Order at Palencia, Spain, where he deepened his understanding of the Catholic faith. Giles' dedication and intelligence led to his appointment as the Dominican provincial for Spain.

Throughout his life, Giles demonstrated a profound devotion to God and the Church. He tirelessly preached the Gospel and worked diligently to spread the message of Christ to all those he encountered. His teachings and sermons were highly regarded, and many sought his spiritual guidance.

Blessed Giles of Santarém died on May 14, 1265, in Santarem, Portugal, at the age of 80. He passed away from natural causes, and reports of miraculous healings at his tomb began to circulate shortly after his death. These accounts of miraculous healings further solidified his reputation as a holy man.

Today, relics believed to belong to Blessed Giles are preserved in a private home in San Martino do Porto, Portugal. The faithful continue to venerate him, honoring his memory and seeking his intercession. On May 14, his feast day, and sometimes on May 15 according to certain calendars, Catholics celebrate the life and holiness of Blessed Giles of Santarém.

Blessed Giles was beatified on May 9, 1748, by Pope Benedict XIV, who confirmed the cultus, or popular devotion, surrounding him. His beatification serves as recognition of his exemplary life and the impact he had on the faithful during his time and beyond. Blessed Giles of Santarém's life stands as a testament to the transformative power of conversion, the importance of deepening one's knowledge and understanding of the faith, and the dedication to spreading God's love to all.
