Early life
Giuseppe Toniolo was born at Treviso on 7 March 1845.[1] As a boarder at the Convitto Marco Foscarini in Venice he met Monsignor Luigi Dalla Vecchia, who guided him spiritually.[1] He graduated in law at Padua in 1867 and the following year was appointed assistant to the chair of law and politics in the same faculty, beginning a university career in which he joined science and faith.[1]
Family and work
He married Maria Schiatti on 4 September 1878, and seven children were born of the union.[1] Though of different characters, he all thought and meditation, she all liveliness and practical sense, they had a complete understanding.[1] He worked so that Catholics should be present in civil society through new forms of association: on 29 June 1867 the Società della Gioventù Cattolica Italiana was born, the first nucleus of what would become Azione Cattolica, and he also took part in founding the Opera dei Congressi and the Unione Cattolica per gli studi sociali.[1] As a professor he elaborated a sociological theory affirming the primacy of ethics and the Christian spirit over the hard laws of economics, proposing rest on feast days, the limitation of working hours, the defence of small property and the protection of the work of women and children.[1] In 1894 he wrote to Monsignor Ballerini that it was 'urgent to reconcile the results of science with faith', and Pius X made his own a project for an international scientific association developed from 1904 between him and Desirè Mercier of Louvain.[1]
Death and recognition
In April 1918 the last period of his life began, marked by physical pain from several illnesses and by spiritual pain for the lost peace in Europe, in harmony with Benedict XV.[1] Confined to bed, he obtained from the pope permission to set up an altar in his room for the celebration of Mass.[1] He died on 7 October 1918, the day dedicated to the Madonna del Rosario.[1] He was beatified by Pope Benedict XVI on 29 April 2012.[1]

Giuseppe Toniolo was born at Treviso in 1845. As a boarder at the Marco Foscarini college in Venice he met Monsignor Luigi Dalla Vecchia, who guided him with wisdom and balance. He graduated in law at Padua in 1867 and was appointed the following year assistant to the chair of legal and political science in the same faculty, beginning a distinguished academic career in which he joined science to faith and professional rigour to love of the Church. On 4 September 1878 he married Maria Schiatti, and they had seven children; different in temperament, he all thought and abstraction, she all spirit and practicality, they lived the sacrament of marriage as a source of grace for the whole family. He worked so that Catholics might be present in civil society through new forms of association, and shared in founding the Society of Italian Catholic Youth, the Opera dei Congressi and the Catholic Union for Social Studies.
His sociological work asserted the primacy of ethics and the Christian spirit over the hard laws of economics, arguing for the Sunday rest, limits on working hours, the defence of small property and protection for the labour of women and children.
