Biografía
Blessed Gonzalo Diaz Di Amarante was born in 1540 in Amarante, Portugal. Little is known about his early life, but it is believed that he led a simple and devoted existence. In 1603, he arrived in Lima, Peru, and joined the Mercedarians at the Convent of Mercy.
In the religious order, Blessed Gonzalo served as a doorman and porter for his house. He was known for his great humility, always putting the needs of others before his own. Despite his lowly position, he was highly respected within the community for his deep prayer life, his charity towards the indigenous people and the poor, and his unwavering devotion to God.
Blessed Gonzalo's reputation for holiness grew steadily, as numerous miracles were attributed to his intercession. Many sought him out for his miraculous ability to heal through prayer, and it is said that he had a special gift for comforting those who were suffering. Additionally, he received visions of the Blessed Virgin Mary, which strengthened his faith and inspired those around him.
As a devoted member of the Mercedarian order, Blessed Gonzalo also served as the chaplain of their house in Callao, Peru. He ministered to both the religious community and the local population, showing compassion and love to all he encountered.
On January 27, 1618, Blessed Gonzalo Diaz Di Amarante passed away in Callao, Peru, at the age of 78. He died peacefully of natural causes and was laid to rest in the Mercedarian church in Lima. His tomb became a place of pilgrimage for those seeking his intercession and experiencing miraculous healings.
Although he has not been formally declared a saint by the Catholic Church, Blessed Gonzalo Diaz Di Amarante is venerated by many as a holy man and a model of Christian virtue. His feast day is celebrated by the Mercedarians on January 27th, as they honor his memory and the impact he had on the community through his deep faith, selflessness, and dedication to serving God and his fellow human beings.
