Beato Hryhorii Lakota

Blessed Hryhorii Lakota, also known as Gregor Lakota, Gregory Lakota, Hryhorij Lakota, or Hryhory Lakota, was a Greek Catholic priest and martyr. He was born on January 31, 1883, in Holodivka, Lviv District, Ukraine.

Lakota's deep commitment to the Catholic faith led him to pursue theological studies at Lviv, Ukraine. After completing his studies, he was ordained as a priest in 1908 at Przemysl, which at the time was in modern-day Poland. His dedication and scholarly achievements in theology led him to obtain a Doctor of Theology degree from the University of Vienna, Austria, in 1911.

In 1913, Lakota became a professor at the Ukrainian seminary in Przemysl and eventually served as its rector. He was highly respected for his knowledge and guidance in seminary education, shaping and nurturing the vocations of many future priests.

On May 16, 1926, Lakota was appointed as the Auxiliary Bishop of Przemysl, Poland. In this role, he devoted himself to the spiritual growth of the faithful and worked tirelessly to promote unity and strengthen the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church.

Tragically, Lakota's unwavering faith and dedication to his community placed him in great danger. On June 9, 1946, he was arrested by Soviet authorities for refusing to renounce his Catholic faith. He was falsely accused of anti-Soviet activities and subsequently sentenced to ten years of forced labor in Vorkuta, Russia.

Despite the harsh conditions and persecution he endured, Lakota's faith remained steadfast. He persevered, providing solace and spiritual guidance to his fellow prisoners. Unfortunately, the suffering and deprivation took a toll on his health, and on November 12, 1950, Blessed Hryhorii Lakota passed away in the prison camp of Abez, Vorkuta, Russia.

Blessed Hryhorii Lakota is considered one of the Martyrs Killed Under Communist Regimes in Eastern Europe. His unwavering faith and martyrdom have earned him great admiration and veneration within the Catholic Church. Pope John Paul II recognized his martyrdom, and on April 24, 2001, Lakota was officially declared venerable. Just a few months later, on June 27, 2001, Pope John Paul II beatified Blessed Hryhorii Lakota, honoring his sacrifice and steadfastness in the face of persecution.

Today, Blessed Hryhorii Lakota serves as an inspiration for Christians around the world, reminding them of the importance of staying true to their faith, even in the most challenging circumstances. His feast day is celebrated on November 5th, according to the Martyrology, and is observed on November 12th in some calendars. Additionally, he is recognized on June 27th as one of the Martyrs Killed Under Communist Regimes in Eastern Europe.
