Beato Hugo Green

Blessed Hugh Green, also known as Ferdinand Brooke, was born in London, England, and was educated at Peterhouse, Cambridge. He was a brilliant scholar, known for his intellectual prowess and accomplishments.

In his early years, Blessed Hugh Green experienced a profound conversion to Catholicism. This led him to pursue a deeper understanding of his faith and a calling to the priesthood. He embarked on a journey of religious studies and eventually traveled to Douai, France, to continue his formation for the priesthood.

After diligent study and preparation, Hugh was ordained as a Catholic priest in 1612 at Douai. Filled with a burning zeal for his newfound faith, he returned to England and devoted himself to serving the covert Catholic community, especially in Dorset.

During this time, England was faced with intense persecution of Catholics. The penalties for practicing the Catholic faith were severe, including fines, imprisonment, and even death. Despite these dangers, Blessed Hugh Green fearlessly risked his life to minister to the faithful and provide spiritual support in the face of oppression.

It was on August 19, 1642, that Hugh Green met his martyrdom. He was unjustly accused, arrested, and sentenced to death by hanging for the crime of being a Catholic priest. His execution took place in Dorchester, Dorset, England, where he willingly embraced his fate and offered his life as a witness to the enduring faith of Catholics.

Blessed Hugh Green's life and martyrdom exemplify profound courage, unwavering faith, and selfless dedication to the Catholic Church. His commitment to his beliefs, even in the face of persecution and death, is a testament to his deep love for God and the Church.

Recognizing his heroic virtues and his martyrdom, Pope Pius XI declared him venerable on December 8, 1929. Just a week later, on December 15, 1929, Pope Pius XI beatified him, bestowing upon him the title of "Blessed."

Today, Blessed Hugh Green is honored and celebrated on August 19, the anniversary of his martyrdom, as well as on October 29, collectively with the Martyrs of Douai. Catholics around the world look to him as a shining example of faith, courage, and devotion.
