Beato Innocencio de Berzo

Blessed Innocent of Berzo, also known as Giovanni Scalvinoni, Innocenzo de Berzo, was a renowned Capuchin priest born on March 19, 1844, in Niardo, Brescia, Italy. From a young age, he displayed a strong inclination towards the Franciscan way of life, and his special gift in working with those seeking to embrace this vocation soon became apparent.

Innocent's dedication and zeal for the Franciscan life did not go unnoticed, and he was appointed as the assistant novice master, assisting and guiding those who aspired to become members of the Capuchin Order. His wisdom, patience, and deep spirituality made him an exceptional mentor, and he was later entrusted with the position of director of candidates for the Order.

Throughout his life, Innocent remained steadfast in his commitment to serve God and his fellow brothers. He exemplified the virtues of poverty, humility, and obedience, as practiced by the Franciscan tradition. His exemplary life and teachings served as an inspiration to many, and he was regarded as a spiritual guide and source of strength for those who sought his counsel.

Tragically, on March 3, 1890, while on a preaching tour, Innocent succumbed to influenza and passed away in Bergamo, Italy. Though his earthly life was cut short, his spiritual impact continued to resonate with those who had known him and experienced his ministry.

Blessed Innocent of Berzo was venerated on March 21, 1943, by Pope Pius XII, who recognized his exemplary heroic virtues. On November 12, 1961, Pope John XXIII beatified him, affirming his sanctity and elevating him to the ranks of the blessed.
