Biografía

Blessed Ismael Escrihuela Esteve, also known as the Soldier of Christ, was a devoted layman in the archdiocese of Valencia, Spain. Born on May 20, 1902, in Tavernes de Valldigna, Valencia, he grew up in a deeply Catholic family and was raised with a strong faith.

Ismael married Josefa Grau, and together they were blessed with three children. Despite his commitments as a husband and father, Ismael never failed to prioritize his spiritual life. He actively participated in Catholic Action, an organization that promotes the lay apostolate and encourages the laity to live out their faith in all aspects of life.

Known for his unwavering devotion, Ismael always wore a cross in his buttonhole, earning him the nickname "Soldier of Christ." This small yet powerful symbol served as a constant reminder of his commitment to his Christian faith.

Tragically, during the tumultuous and violent era of the Spanish Civil War, Ismael Escrihuela Esteve became a victim of religious persecution. On September 8, 1936, he was martyred in Picadero de Paterna, Valencia, for his unwavering fidelity to Christ and his Catholic convictions. His unyielding dedication to his faith, even in the face of persecution, made him a true witness of Christian courage and conviction during one of Spain's darkest periods.

Ismael's martyrdom served as a testament to his deep love for Christ and his unwavering commitment to live out his faith despite the risks involved. His life and sacrifice became an inspiration for many, and his reputation for holiness continued to grow after his death.

In due recognition of his sanctity, Pope John Paul II decreed the martyrdom of Ismael Escrihuela Esteve on December 18, 2000. This decree opened the path for his beatification, which took place on March 11, 2001, also officiated by Pope John Paul II.

Blessed Ismael Escrihuela Esteve's feast day is celebrated on September 8th, commemorating the day of his martyrdom. As a faithful layman, he serves as a powerful example of how ordinary individuals can strive for holiness and heroically defend their faith in challenging times.

While information about specific representations is unavailable, devotion to Blessed Ismael Escrihuela Esteve has spread among the faithful, who look to him as an intercessor and model of faithfulness. His life and sacrifice continue to inspire and challenge believers to live out their faith boldly and authentically.
