Beato
Beata Itala Mela
Oblate of the monastery of San Paolo fuori le Mura, La Spezia, 1904-1957
Early life
Itala Mela was born on 28 August 1904 at La Spezia to Pasquino and Luigia Bianchini, both teachers, who were strangers to religion.[1] She spent her childhood and adolescence with her maternal grandparents; though she received the sacraments, by her own admission she 'ignored the faith', neglected religious practice and devoted herself to study.[1] The death of her brother Enrico, aged 9, on 27 February 1920, was a deep grief that set off her revolt against God and the faith.[1] After the liceo she enrolled in the faculty of classical letters at the university of Genoa and, despite her declared atheism, lived in the institute of 'Nostra Signora della Purificazione'.[1]
Conversion
Her conversion came on the eve of the Immacolata in 1922: invited to a mass, she prayed «Signore, se ci sei, fatti conoscere!», went to confession and received communion.[1] P. Marchisio became her first spiritual director.[1] On 3 August 1928, at Pontremoli, she received from the tabernacle of the church of the seminary a ray of light and a divine message; she had frequent visions of the Trinità.[1] She decided to enter the monastery of 'Mont Vierge a Népion sur Meuse' in France, but was struck by heart disease and had to give up.[1]
Vocation
On 4 January 1933 she became an oblate of the monastery of San Paolo fuori le Mura in Rome, and on the feast of the SS. Trinità of 1933 added to the monastic vows a fifth vow: to devote herself entirely to making known the mystery of the indwelling of the Trinità in the soul.[1] From then on she took the religious name of Maria della Trinità; illness forced her to return to her family at La Spezia and to give up teaching.[1] From 1945 to 1954 she worked for the group of the 'Laureati cattolici'.[1]
Death and recognition
She died on 29 April 1957 and since 1983 has been buried in the crypt of the cathedral of Christ Re at La Spezia.[1] She was beatified on 10 June 2017 by Pope Francis.[1]
