Beato Józef Zaplata

Blessed Józef Zaplata, also known as Prisoner P22099, was born on 5 March 1904 in Jerka, Wielkopolskie, Poland, into a humble farming family. Despite facing numerous challenges and growing up in poverty, Józef possessed a deep faith and a desire to serve God.

After completing his elementary education, Józef joined the army and served his country with distinction. However, his true calling lay elsewhere. In 1927, he decided to answer the call to religious life and joined the Brothers of the Sacred Heart of Jesus. Józef made his first profession on 8 September 1928 and solemn vows on 10 March 1938 in Poznan, Poland.

Józef's unwavering commitment to his faith and his dedication to serving others led him to various roles within the Church. He served in the office of the archbishop of Poznan, demonstrating his administrative skills and willingness to assist in any way he could.

Later, Józef became the sacristan of the church of Saint Elizabeth in Lwów, Poland (modern Lviv, Ukraine). As sacristan, he assumed the responsibility of ensuring the proper organization and care of liturgical items, demonstrating his attention to detail and reverence for the sacred.

However, during World War II, Józef's life took a tragic turn. Arrested by the Gestapo for his involvement in resistance activities, he was unjustly accused and sentenced to imprisonment. Józef was first deported to the Mauthausen concentration camp, then transferred to Gusen and finally ended up in Dachau.

Despite facing immense hardship and mistreatment in the concentration camps, Józef's faith remained steadfast. He sought to bring solace and consolation to his fellow prisoners, volunteering to care for those afflicted with the deadly typhus disease. It was during this selfless act of service that Józef contracted typhus himself, ultimately leading to his death.

Blessed Józef Zaplata died on 19 February 1945 at the Nazi concentration camp Dachau in Oberbayern, Germany, due to typhus and the abuse endured during his imprisonment. His martyrdom serves as a testament to his unwavering commitment to God and his fellow prisoners, even in the face of extreme suffering.

Recognizing his heroic virtues and sacrificial life, Pope John Paul II declared Józef Zaplata venerable on 26 March 1999 by decreeing his martyrdom. Further, on 13 June 1999, Pope John Paul II beatified him, elevating him to the rank of blessed and placing him among the 108 Martyrs of World War II.

Although no specific representation has been mentioned, it is evident that Blessed Józef Zaplata embodies the virtues of courage, selflessness, and devotion to God and others. His feast days are celebrated on 19 February and 12 June, alongside the other martyrs of World War II.
