Beato Jaume Balcells Grau

Blessed Jaume Balcells Grau, also known as Father Gabriel of the Annunciation, was a Catholic priest and member of the Discalced Carmelites who was martyred during the Spanish Civil War. He is venerated as a martyr and his feast day is celebrated on July 25th.

Jaume Balcells Grau was born on October 12, 1908, in Valls, Tarragona, Spain. From a young age, he displayed a deep piety and a strong desire to serve God, which led him to join the Discalced Carmelites. He entered the Carmelite novitiate and made his profession of vows, dedicating himself to a life of prayer, contemplation, and dedication to God.

Father Gabriel of the Annunciation was known for his devotion to the Virgin Mary and his deep contemplative prayer life. He sought to imitate the example of the great Carmelite saints, such as St. John of the Cross and St. Teresa of Avila, by seeking union with God in the silence and solitude of the Carmelite monastery.

However, his peaceful life as a monk was soon disrupted by the outbreak of the Spanish Civil War in 1936. During this turbulent period, religious persecution was rampant, and numerous clergy and religious were targeted for their faith. Father Gabriel, along with many other priests and religious, became a victim of this persecution.

On July 25, 1936, Father Gabriel was arrested by anti-Catholic forces and taken to Montcada, Barcelona, where he was put on trial for his religious beliefs. Despite facing intense pressure to renounce his faith, Father Gabriel remained steadfast in his commitment to Christ. Refusing to betray his religious vows or denounce his Catholic faith, he was sentenced to death.

On that same day, July 25, 1936, Father Gabriel of the Annunciation was martyred for his fidelity to the Gospel and his dedication to serving God. His heroic witness of faith continues to inspire and edify believers to this day.

In recognition of his martyrdom, Father Gabriel was venerated on June 22, 2004, by Pope John Paul II who decreed the recognition of his martyrdom. Later, on October 28, 2007, Pope Benedict XVI beatified him, acknowledging his sanctity and presenting him as a model of virtue and faith for the Church.
