Biografía

Blessed Jaume Boguñá Casanovas, also known as Father Martí of Barcelona, was a Catholic martyr and Franciscan Capuchin. He was born on 4 October 1895 in Sant Andreu de Palomar, Barcelona, Spain. At the young age of 20, Jaume Boguñá Casanovas made his profession as a Franciscan Capuchin on 18 April 1915, dedicating his life to the service of God and the Church.

After several years of diligent study and preparation, Jaume was ordained a priest on 5 May 1918. As a member of the Capuchin Order, he embraced the virtues of poverty, chastity, and obedience, seeking to emulate the example set by Saint Francis of Assisi.

However, during the turbulent times of the Spanish Civil War, the faith of Catholics was severely tested. Jaume Boguñá Casanovas found himself caught in the midst of the conflict, and his unwavering commitment to his religious beliefs led to his imprisonment and eventual martyrdom at the hands of Marxists. On 19 December 1936, he was brutally murdered, displaying his steadfast faith and love for Christ even in the face of extreme persecution.

The life and heroic death of Father Martí of Barcelona did not go unnoticed. His unwavering dedication to his religious vocation and his willingness to sacrifice his life for his faith exemplified the virtues of a true Christian martyr. In recognition of his martyrdom, Pope Francis declared him venerable on 5 June 2015, signifying the Church's recognition of his heroic virtues. Subsequently, on 21 November 2015, Pope Francis beatified him during a celebration at the cathedral of Santa Creu i Santa EulÖlia in Barcelona, presided over by Cardinal Angelo Amato.

Blessed Jaume Boguñá Casanovas serves as an inspiration to all believers, reminding us of the importance of perseverance, fortitude, and unwavering faith in the face of adversity. His beatification by Pope Francis stands as a testament to his holiness and the enduring impact of his martyrdom on the Catholic Church.
