Biografía

Blessed Jaume Payás Fargas, also known as Jaime Payás, was a Spanish Catholic priest and member of the Claretians. He was born on 14 August 1907 in Castelltersol, Barcelona, Spain. Blessed Jaume Payás professed his vows as a member of the Claretians on 15 August 1924, dedicating his life to serving God and the church.

Following his religious profession, Jaume Payás was ordained as a priest on 21 June 1931. He actively worked to spread and deepen the Catholic faith, ministering to the spiritual needs of the faithful through his preaching, teaching, and pastoral care.

Tragically, during the tumultuous period of the Spanish Civil War, Blessed Jaume Payás became a victim of religious persecution. On 25 July 1936, he was shot to death in Sallent, Barcelona, Spain, for his unwavering commitment to his faith.

In recognition of his martyrdom and steadfast devotion, Jaume Payás, together with 109 other Spanish Claretian Martyrs, is remembered and honored on 1 February. Additionally, his individual feast day is celebrated on 25 July, the date of his martyrdom.

Blessed Jaume Payás' exemplary life and ultimate sacrifice were recognized officially on 21 December 2016, when Pope Francis declared him venerable by decreeing his martyrdom. This recognition was a significant step towards his beatification, which occurred on 21 October 2017. The beatification ceremony was held at the Basilica of Sagrada Familia in Barcelona, Spain, and presided over by Archbishop Angelo Amato.
