Beato Juan de Caramola

Blessed Jean of Caramola, also known as Giovanni of Caramola, was born around 1280 in Toulouse, France. In the year 1300, which was declared a Holy Year, he moved to Italy and began his spiritual journey.

Jean chose a life of solitude and became a Benedictine hermit, living in a cave on Mount Caramola in Basilicata, Italy. His dedication to a life of prayer, silence, and penance drew people to him, seeking his guidance and blessings. Many considered him a living saint due to the miracles he performed.

Later, Jean joined the Cistercian order as a lay-brother at the renowned Abbey of Santa Maria del Sagittario in Naples, Italy. He continued to practice rigorous asceticism and maintain his steadfast commitment to silence. Many who encountered him believed he was mute, unaware of his profound spirituality and the deep connection he had with the Divine.

Blessed Jean of Caramola's reputation as a miracle worker spread far and wide. Countless stories circulated of his healing touch, his ability to convert sinners through his prayers, and his powerful intercession for those in need. Even though he rarely spoke, his actions and prayers spoke volumes.

On August 26, 1339, Jean passed away at the Abbey of Santa Maria del Sagittario, succumbing to natural causes. His body was found incorrupt in 1500, a testament to his holiness. The relics of Blessed Jean were initially moved to the church of San Giovanni Battista di Chiaromonte in 1808. Then, in 2002, his body was once again discovered incorrupt, further confirming his sanctity.

While there is no specific representation attributed to Blessed Jean of Caramola, his life exemplified deep humility, self-denial, and an unwavering devotion to God. His feast day is celebrated on August 26th, honoring the day of his death.

Although not officially venerated or beatified at this time, the faithful continue to honor Blessed Jean of Caramola and seek his intercession, recognizing him as an inspiring model of holiness and a devout servant of God.
