Biografía

Blessed Jeanmarie Rouchouze, also known as Father Marcellin, Marcellino, or John Mary Rouchouze, was born on 14 December 1810 in Saint-Julien-en-Jarez, Loire, France. He was a member of the Picpus Fathers, a religious congregation founded by the Servant of God Marie Joseph Coudrin.

On 2 February 1837, Jean-Marie made his profession to Marie Joseph Coudrin, dedicating himself to the service of God and the Picpus Fathers. He was a dedicated educator and taught subjects such as Latin, mathematics, and philosophy in Congregation schools in Belgium.

Despite his reluctance, Jean-Marie was ordained to the priesthood on 5 June 1852. From that point on, he actively served in various roles within the Picpus Fathers. He became the Secretary-General of the Fathers in Paris, France, where he worked diligently to support and further the mission of the congregation.

Unfortunately, during the turbulent period of the French Commune in 1871, Blessed Jeanmarie Rouchouze fell victim to the persecutions. He was martyred and tragically shot on 26 May 1871 in Paris. His courageous witness to the faith and his unwavering commitment to the Gospel ultimately led to his death as he defended his beliefs, even in the face of danger.

In recognition of his heroic life and martyrdom, Pope Francis declared Jeanmarie Rouchouze venerable on 25 November 2021. The Pope proceeded to beatify him on 22 April 2023, with the beatification celebration taking place in Paris, France. The beatification ceremony served as an occasion to honor Jeanmarie Rouchouze and commemorate his sacrifice for the sake of the Gospel.

Blessed Jeanmarie Rouchouze's life serves as an inspiration not only for members of the Picpus Fathers but also for all Christians. His steadfast faith, commitment to education, and dedication to his religious congregation make him a remarkable figure in Catholic history. May his example continue to inspire and guide us in our own spiritual journeys.
