Biografía

Blessed Joan Ayats Plantalech, also known as Brother Eloi of Bianya, was a devout Catholic who dedicated his life to serving God as a Franciscan Capuchin friar. He was baptized on the day of his birth on June 4, 1875, in Sant Salvador de Bianya, Girona, Spain.

Joan Ayats Plantalech entered the religious life and made his solemn profession as a Capuchin friar on June 26, 1904. Throughout his religious life, he embraced the virtues of poverty, chastity, and obedience, following in the footsteps of Saint Francis of Assisi.

During the tumultuous period of the Spanish Civil War, Brother Eloi faced violent persecution due to his faith. Tragically, on July 29, 1936, he was ruthlessly murdered by Marxists in Barcelona, Spain. His unwavering commitment to his religious convictions and his refusal to renounce his faith in the face of adversity made him a martyr for the Catholic Church.

Recognizing his martyrdom, Pope Francis, on June 5, 2015, venerated Blessed Joan Ayats Plantalech, issuing a decree of martyrdom. Later, on November 21, 2015, Pope Francis officially beatified him, acknowledging his enduring faith and sacrifice for the Church.

The beatification ceremony took place at the cathedral of Santa Creu i Santa EulÖlia in Barcelona, Spain, presided over by Cardinal Angelo Amato. It was a joyous occasion, where the Catholic community celebrated the life and martyrdom of this holy friar.

Although specific details about Blessed Joan Ayats Plantalech's life and works are limited, his unwavering dedication to his religious vocation and his ultimate sacrifice serve as an example of faithfulness and courage for all believers. He is remembered and honored on his feast day, July 29, as a testament to his martyrdom and commitment to Christ.
