Biografía

Blessed Joan Garriga Pagés, also known as Joan Garriga i Pagès, was born on August 31, 1908, in Sant Martí Sacalm, Barcelona, Spain. He was a member of the Claretians, a religious congregation founded by Saint Anthony Mary Claret, and he professed on December 8, 1926.

Joan Garriga Pagés dedicated his life to serving God and others through his religious vocation. He lived during a tumultuous period in Spanish history, marked by the social and political conflicts of the Spanish Civil War. Unfortunately, it was during this war that he met his martyrdom.

On August 21, 1936, Joan Garriga Pagés was unjustly executed by being shot in Lleida, Spain. He was taken by surprise and did not have an opportunity to defend himself. His death was a result of his unwavering faith and commitment to his religious beliefs.

In recognition of his sacrifice and dedication, Pope Francis declared him venerable on December 21, 2016, and later beatified him on October 21, 2017. The beatification ceremony took place at the Basilica of Sagrada Familia in Barcelona, Spain, and was presided over by Archbishop Angelo Amato, who represented the Holy Father.

Blessed Joan Garriga Pagés is honored and remembered on his feast days, which are celebrated on August 21 and February 1. The latter date is dedicated to the commemoration of the 109 Spanish Claretian Martyrs, among whom he is recognized.

Although specific details about his life and accomplishments may be limited, the faithful venerate Blessed Joan Garriga Pagés for his ultimate sacrifice and dedication to his religious calling. His beatification serves as a testament to his exemplary faith and commitment to the Gospel.
