Biografía

Blessed Joaquina Rey Aguirre, also known as María Purificación Rey Aguirre, was a devout nun and member of the Daughters of Charity of Saint Vincent de Paul. She was born on 23 December 1895 in Bilbao, Vizcaya, Spain, to a devout Catholic family. From an early age, Joaquina showed a deep commitment to her faith, and her desire to serve others led her to join the Daughters of Charity.

As a Daughter of Charity, Joaquina dedicated her life to serving the poor and underprivileged, following the footsteps of Saint Vincent de Paul. She wholeheartedly embraced the charism of her religious congregation, which focused on caring for those in need and living a life of selflessness and love. Joaquina's devotion extended to her fellow sisters in the religious community, as she always sought to support and encourage them in their spiritual journeys.

Tragically, during the Spanish Civil War, the Daughters of Charity faced persecution due to their commitment to their faith and their dedication to social justice. Sister Joaquina, along with many of her sisters, became a target of the anti-Catholic factions. On 29 October 1936, in Gilet, Valencia, Spain, she was martyred for her unwavering faith and commitment to serving others. Her death was a testament to her courage and steadfastness in the face of adversity.

Following her untimely death, the holiness of Blessed Joaquina Rey Aguirre was recognized by the Catholic Church. On 27 June 2011, Pope Benedict XVI decreed her martyrdom, acknowledging her as a witness to the faith. Her beatification took place on 13 October 2013, presided over by Pope Francis, who recognized her as a model of Christian virtue and a source of inspiration for all believers.

Blessed Joaquina Rey Aguirre's life and martyrdom serve as a powerful reminder of the sacrifices made by individuals who dedicate themselves to serving others and living out their faith. She continues to be venerated by the Catholic Church as a blessed and intercessor for those in need. Her feast day is celebrated on 29 October each year, allowing the faithful to honor her memory and seek her intercession for their own spiritual growth and acts of charity.
