Biografía
Blessed John Del Prado, also known as Giovanni di Prado or John of Prado, was a devout Catholic priest and missionary who dedicated his life to spreading the teachings of the Church. He was born in Morgobresio, in the Kingdom of Léon, Spain, although his exact date of birth remains unknown.
Having a fervent desire to deepen his knowledge of theology, John pursued his studies at the prestigious University of Salamanca in Spain. It was during his time there that he felt called to serve God as a member of the Barefooted Franciscans of the Strict Observance, commonly known as the Discalced Franciscans or the Friars Minor.
In 1613, John was sent on a mission to Morocco, a predominantly Muslim country. His objective was to bring the message of Christianity to the Muslim population and to offer spiritual guidance and support to the Christian minority living in Morocco at that time. Despite the challenging environment and the risks involved, John fearlessly embarked on this missionary journey, fully aware of the potential dangers he may face.
Unfortunately, during his mission, John and two of his fellow Spanish friars were captured and accused of spreading Christianity, which was seen as a threat to the ruler of Marrakesh's authority. The specific names of the two friars who accompanied John have been lost to history. Subsequently, John, along with his companions, endured imprisonment, torture, and ultimately martyrdom.
On May 24, 1636, in Marrakesh, Morocco, Blessed John Del Prado was burned to death as a result of his unwavering faith and commitment to his missionary work among the Muslim population. His courageous sacrifice stands as a testament to his devotion to the Christian faith, and he is considered a martyr within the Catholic Church.
In recognition of his life of piety and selflessness, Pope Benedict XIII beatified Blessed John Del Prado on May 24, 1728. This beatification is a formal declaration by the Catholic Church that John is worthy of veneration and that he now rests in the presence of God, interceding for those who seek his help and guidance.
Blessed John Del Prado's feast day is celebrated annually on May 24th, to commemorate his martyrdom and to honor his profound dedication to the Christian faith. His life and sacrifice continue to inspire and serve as a reminder of the enduring power of faith and the lengths one can go in the pursuit of spreading God's love to all corners of the world.
