Beato Juan Pibush

Blessed John Pibush, also known as John Pew, was born in Thirsk, Yorkshire, England, to Thomas and Jane Pibush. He lived during a tumultuous period in English history when Catholicism was suppressed and priests were persecuted.

In 1580, at the age of twenty, John Pibush traveled to Rheims, France, to receive his education. There, he studied at the prestigious seminary and began his path towards priesthood. After six years of intensive training, he was ordained as a deacon in 1586. His ordination as a priest took place on 14 March 1587.

Filled with zeal for his faith, Blessed John Pibush returned to England as a missioner on 14 January 1588. However, his ministry was short-lived, as he was arrested in 1593 in Morton-in-Marsh, Gloucester, on the charge of being a priest. He was imprisoned at the Gatehouse in Westminster, where he spent a year in captivity.

Seeking freedom, Pibush managed to escape from Gloucester on 19 February 1594. Unfortunately, his liberation was short-lived, as he was recaptured the next day in Matson. Subsequently, he was sent back to Westminster, where he faced a trial and was convicted on 1 July 1595 for the treason of practicing Catholic priesthood.

For over five years, Blessed John Pibush endured the hardships of Queen's Bench prison, where he was held as he awaited execution. Despite his dire circumstances, he actively ministered to his fellow prisoners, providing spiritual guidance and support whenever he could.

Tragically, on 18 February 1601, John Pibush was hanged at Saint Thomas's Waterings in Camberwell, England. His unwavering dedication to his faith and his courageous sacrifice earned him the status of martyr. Pope Pius XI officially recognized his martyrdom, and on 8 December 1929, he was venerated as a Blessed by the Catholic Church. Pope Pius XI then beatified him on 15 December 1929, further honoring his memory and sanctity.

Although limited information is provided about Blessed John Pibush's life and activities, his courageous actions as a missionary and his steadfastness in the face of persecution serve as a true testament to his unwavering faith and devotion to Christ. His life and martyrdom stand as an example of Christian virtue and dedication in a time of great adversity.
