Biografía

Blessed José López Piteira, also known as José María or Manuel López Piteira, was an Augustinian friar and deacon who was martyred during the Spanish Civil War. He was born on 27 March 1913 in Arroyo Blanco, Jatibonico, Camagüey, Cuba.

José López Piteira grew up in a deeply religious Catholic family and felt a calling to serve God from a young age. In pursuit of his vocation, he joined the Order of St. Augustine and was ordained as a deacon. He embraced his religious life with fervor, dedicating himself to prayer, study, and ministering to the faithful.

Unfortunately, the outbreak of the Spanish Civil War in 1936 plunged the country into chaos and religious persecution. As a result of his unwavering faith and commitment to his calling, José López Piteira became a target for those opposed to the Catholic Church. Despite the risks, he refused to renounce his faith or abandon his duties.

Tragically, on 30 November 1936, José López Piteira was martyred in the city of Paracuellos de Jarama, near Madrid. He was executed for his religious beliefs, becoming a martyr for the Catholic faith. His courage and steadfastness in the face of persecution serve as an example of unwavering devotion and love for God.

Blessed José López Piteira was publicly recognized for his martyrdom and venerated by the Catholic Church on 1 June 2007 when Pope Benedict XVI issued a decree of martyrdom. On 28 October 2007, Pope Benedict XVI officially beatified him, declaring him Blessed José López Piteira.

Blessed José López Piteira's feast day is celebrated annually on 30 November, commemorating the day of his martyrdom. Though not much additional information is available about his life and ministry, his legacy lives on as an inspiring example of faith and dedication to the Catholic Church.

Throughout his life, Blessed José López Piteira exemplified the virtues of love, compassion, and unwavering devotion to God. His martyrdom stands as a testament to his unyielding faith in the face of adversity and remains an inspiration for all Catholics seeking to strengthen their own relationship with God.
