Biografía
Blessed José María Celaya Badiola was born on 24 February 1887 in Azcoitia, Guip√∫zcoa, Spain. He was baptized at the tender age of one day, a gesture that marked the beginning of his spiritual journey. From an early age, he displayed a deep devotion to God and a strong desire to serve the Church.
At the age of nineteen, José María Celaya Badiola joined the Salesians of Don Bosco in Carabanchel Alto, Madrid, Spain on 5 January 1906. This decision aligned perfectly with his aspirations and allowed him to deepen his faith while receiving a quality education. He dedicated himself wholeheartedly to the Salesian mission, embracing the core values of education, youth ministry, and serving the needy.
As a member of the Salesian congregation, José María Celaya Badiola lived a life of humility and dedication, always seeking to emulate the virtues of Saint John Bosco. He had a particular affection for young people, recognizing their potential and the importance of guiding them towards a virtuous life. Throughout his years as a religious, he diligently worked to enhance the spiritual and educational wellbeing of the youth under his care.
Unfortunately, the Spanish Civil War brought great turmoil and persecution upon the Church in Spain. José María Celaya Badiola, along with numerous other priests and religious, became a victim of this violent conflict. On 9 August 1936, in Madrid, Spain, he was martyred for his unwavering faith, refusing to renounce his Catholic beliefs even in the face of imminent danger.
The memory and heroic witness of Blessed José María Celaya Badiola live on, even in the midst of adversity. His beatification took place on 28 October 2007, when Pope John Paul II acknowledged his martyrdom and the sanctity of his life. Pope John Paul II also declared him venerable on 26 June 2006, emphasizing his noteworthy virtues and his willingness to lay down his life for his faith.
Today, Blessed José María Celaya Badiola stands as a shining example of faith, courage, and selflessness. His life teaches us the profound value of serving others and remaining steadfast in our beliefs, even in the face of persecution.
