Beato José María Ferrándiz Hernández

Blessed José María Ferrándiz Hernández was a revered Catholic priest in the archdiocese of Valencia, Spain, who met a tragic end during the Spanish Civil War. Born on 11 August 1879 in El Camp de Mirra, Alicante, Spain, he dedicated his life to serving God and his community.

Ordained as a priest, Blessed José María Ferrándiz Hernández was known for his unwavering faith, compassion, and dedication to the teachings of the Catholic Church. He lived during a time of great social and political turmoil in Spain, with tensions running high between different ideological factions.

During the Spanish Civil War, a violent conflict that spanned from 1936 to 1939, religious persecution was prevalent, and many priests, religious individuals, and laypeople faced persecution and martyrdom because of their faith. Tragically, Blessed José María Ferrándiz Hernández became a victim of this persecution.

On 24 September 1936, in the town of Rotglá i Cobrera, Játiva, Valencia, Spain, he was martyred for his commitment to his faith. His sacrifice and unwavering devotion to the Catholic Church earned him the title of martyr.

Recognizing his heroic virtues and sacrifice, Pope John Paul II, on 18 December 2000, declared him venerable through a decree of martyrdom. This declaration affirmed that Blessed José María Ferrándiz Hernández had lived a life of exceptional virtue, aligning himself with the teachings of Christ until his untimely death.

On 11 March 2001, Pope John Paul II beatified Father José María Ferrándiz Hernández, bestowing upon him the title of "Blessed." This act of beatification recognized his martyrdom and presented him as an exemplary model of holiness for Catholics to follow.

Today, Blessed José María Ferrándiz Hernández is remembered and celebrated on his feast day, which falls on 24 September each year. His life serves as an inspiration to Catholics around the world, reminding them of the courage, faith, and sacrificial love that can be found in the pursuit of a virtuous life.
