Biografía

Blessed José María Recalde Mag√∫regui, also known as Ignacio of Galdácano, was born on February 7, 1912 in Galdácano, Vitoria, Spain. He grew up in a devout Catholic family and showed a deep spiritual inclination from a young age. Being attracted to the Franciscan Capuchin way of life, he entered the Order of Friars Minor Capuchin and was ordained a priest.

As a Franciscan Capuchin priest, Blessed José María Recalde Mag√∫regui dedicated his life to serving God and the people entrusted to his care. He lived a life of simplicity, poverty, and humility, modeling his actions after the example of St. Francis of Assisi. He sought to imitate Christ by reaching out to the poor, the marginalized, and those in need, offering them spiritual and material assistance.

During the turbulent times of the Spanish Civil War, Blessed José María Recalde Mag√∫regui fearlessly represented his faith and maintained his commitment to the Gospel values. Despite the increasing hostility towards the Catholic Church and the persecution of clergy, he courageously continued his pastoral work, providing solace, guidance, and sacraments to his parishioners.

Tragically, on August 6, 1936, while serving in the city of Antequera, Málaga, Spain, Blessed José María Recalde Mag√∫regui was martyred for his unwavering faith and refusal to renounce his religious vocation. He bravely faced persecution and the ultimate sacrifice, giving his life for his belief in Jesus Christ and the Catholic Church.

The remarkable holiness and courage displayed by Blessed José María Recalde Mag√∫regui did not go unnoticed. His martyrdom and unwavering faith became an inspiration to many, and his reputation for sanctity spread among the faithful. On March 27, 2013, Pope Francis declared him venerable, acknowledging his heroic virtues. Later, on October 13, 2013, Pope Francis beatified him, recognizing his martyrdom and his supreme sacrifice in witnessing to the truth and love of Christ.

Today, Blessed José María Recalde Mag√∫regui is remembered as a shining example of faith, resilience, and dedication to God. His life and death serve as a powerful reminder of the cost and the call of discipleship in the face of adversity. His feast day is celebrated on August 6, annually, in honor of his martyrdom and his unwavering commitment to the Catholic faith.

May the intercession of Blessed José María Recalde Mag√∫regui inspire and strengthen all those who face challenges to their faith, and may his life continue to shine as a beacon of hope and courage for the faithful around the world.
