Beato José María Roig Llorca

Blessed José María Roig Llorca, born on 5 September 1871 in Oliva, Valencia, Spain, was a revered Franciscan friar who lived during the tumultuous period of the Spanish Civil War. He dedicated his life to serving God and his fellow man, ultimately sacrificing his life as a martyr for his faith.

José María Roig Llorca entered the religious life and joined the Franciscan Order, drawn by his deep devotion to God and his desire to emulate the teachings and example of St. Francis of Assisi. As a friar, he embraced the Franciscan traditions of poverty, humility, and service to the poor.

Throughout his ministry, Blessed José María Roig Llorca demonstrated unwavering commitment to both spiritual and social justice. Tragically, on 31 July 1936, in Puente Genil, Córdoba, Spain, Blessed José María Roig Llorca was martyred for his unwavering loyalty to Catholicism. He faced persecution with courage and grace, offering forgiveness to his persecutors even in his final moments. His martyrdom serves as a testament to his deep commitment to his faith and his unwavering dedication to God.

After his death, Blessed José María Roig Llorca's holiness and sacrifice were recognized by the Catholic Church. On 23 November 2020, Pope Francis declared him venerable, acknowledging his heroic virtue and martyrdom. Then, on 16 October 2021, Pope Francis beatified him, bestowing upon him the title of "Blessed." The beatification recognition ceremony was joyously celebrated at the Cathedral of Nuestra Señora de la Asunción in Córdoba, Spain, and was presided over by Cardinal Marcello Semeraro.
