Beato José María Ruiz Cano

Blessed José María Ruiz Cano, also known as Fr. José María Ruiz Cano, was a Claretian priest who was martyred in the religious persecutions of the Spanish Civil War. He was born on September 13, 1906, in Jerez de los Caballeros, Badajoz, Spain.

From an early age, José María displayed a deep devotion to his faith and a strong desire to serve God. He entered the Claretian Missionaries order and was ordained a priest in 1931. As a Claretian, he dedicated himself to the spiritual well-being of others and worked tirelessly to spread the message of Christ's love and mercy.

When the Spanish Civil War broke out in 1936, religious persecution escalated, targeting priests and religious individuals who refused to renounce their faith. José María, true to his calling, refused to abandon his beliefs and continued to minister to those in need, despite the dangers that surrounded him.

On July 27, 1936, José María was captured by anti-Catholic forces at El Otero, near Sigüenza, Spain. He was brutally tortured and eventually martyred for his refusal to renounce his faith. His martyrdom stood as a testament to his unwavering commitment to Christ and his Church.

José María Ruiz Cano was venerated for his heroic virtue and martyrdom, and on July 1, 2010, Pope Benedict XVI issued a decree of martyrdom, officially recognizing him as a martyr. He was beatified on October 13, 2013, by Pope Francis, who acknowledged his sacrifice and holiness.

Blessed José María Ruiz Cano's feast day is celebrated on July 27, the anniversary of his martyrdom. He serves as an inspiration to all Christians, reminding us of the courage and dedication it takes to remain steadfast in our faith, even in the face of persecution.
