Biografía

Blessed José Vargas Nevado, also known as José Vargas Nevado, was a married layman in the diocese of Córdoba, Spain, who became a martyr during the Spanish Civil War. He was born in 1902 and died on 31 August 1936 in Villaviciosa, Córdoba, Spain.

José Vargas Nevado lived during a turbulent time in Spain's history when political and ideological divisions deeply affected society. Despite the challenges of the era, José remained steadfast in his faith and commitment to his Christian values. He embraced his vocation as a husband and father, carrying out his responsibilities with love and devotion.

In the face of increasing persecution against the Catholic Church, José Vargas Nevado courageously stood up for his beliefs, refusing to renounce his loyalty to Christ and His Church. As a result, he fell victim to the violence and hostility prevalent during the Spanish Civil War and ultimately suffered martyrdom.

His unwavering faith and sacrifice became a source of inspiration for others, and his memory has been venerated by the faithful. On 23 November 2020, Pope Francis recognized his martyrdom through a decree, acknowledging the sacrifice he made for his faith.

The official beatification ceremony honoring Blessed José Vargas Nevado took place on 16 October 2021 at the Cathedral of Nuestra Señora de la Asunción in Córdoba, Spain. Cardinal Marcello Semeraro, who presided over the celebration, led the faithful in recognizing the holiness and martyrdom of José Vargas Nevado.
