Biografía

Blessed José Vega Riaño, also known as Blessed José Vega, was a Spanish Catholic priest and member of the Missionary Oblates of Mary Immaculate. He was born on May 19, 1904, in Siero de la Reina, León, Spain.

From a young age, José felt called to the priesthood and dedicated his life to serving God and his people. He joined the Missionary Oblates of Mary Immaculate, a religious congregation founded by Saint Eugene de Mazenod, known for their commitment to evangelization and spreading the Gospel.

As a devout and dedicated missionary, José served in various locations throughout Spain, ministering to the spiritual needs of the people. He tirelessly preached the Word of God and worked to alleviate the suffering of the poor and marginalized.

Tragically, during the turbulent period of the Spanish Civil War, José became a martyr for his faith. On November 7, 1936, he was captured in Paracuellos de Jarama, Madrid, by Republican forces known for their hostility towards the Catholic Church. Despite facing persecution and the threat of death, José never wavered in his commitment to Christ and his calling as a priest.

José Vega Riaño was executed for his faith, joining the ranks of the Oblate Martyrs of the Spanish Civil War. His feast day is celebrated on November 7, the anniversary of his martyrdom, and November 28, along with the other Oblate Martyrs.

It was not until April 2, 2011, that Pope Benedict XVI officially recognized José Vega's martyrdom by decree, venerating him as a Blessed. Later, on December 17, 2011, Pope Benedict XVI beatified him, bestowing upon José the title of "Blessed."

Blessed José Vega Riaño's life and martyrdom serve as an inspiring example of unwavering faith and dedication to God, even in the face of persecution and adversity. He is remembered as a true hero of the Catholic Church, sacrificing his life for the sake of his love for Christ and his fellow human beings.
