During the turbulent period of the Spanish Civil War, Blessed Josep Cardona courageously remained committed to his faith and his calling as a religious. Unfortunately, his steadfast devotion to the Catholic Church made him a target for persecution by anti-religious forces.
On 5 September 1936, in the town of Sabadell, Barcelona, Spain, Blessed Josep Cardona was shot and martyred for his faith. His unwavering loyalty to his religious vows and his willingness to give his life for Christ earned him a place among the 109 Spanish Claretian Martyrs.

On 21 December 2016, Pope Francis decreed his martyrdom, officially recognizing him as a martyr for the faith. Then, on 21 October 2017, Pope Francis presided over his beatification ceremony at the Basilica of Sagrada Familia in Barcelona, Spain. The beatification was attended by a large gathering of faithful, with the ceremony being led by Archbishop Angelo Amato.
