Beato José Casas Juliá

Blessed Josep Casas Juliá, also known as Joaquim of Saint Joseph, was a Spanish Discalced Carmelites friar who was martyred during the Spanish Civil War. He is venerated as a blessed in the Catholic Church.

Born on 23 December 1915 in Ordal, Barcelona, Spain, Josep Casas Juliá lived a humble and devout life from a young age. He joined the Discalced Carmelites, a religious order known for its emphasis on prayer and contemplation, and dedicated himself to a life of prayer, penance, and service to God.

During the turbulent period of the Spanish Civil War, when religious persecution was rampant in Spain, Blessed Josep Casas Juliá courageously remained steadfast in his faith. Despite the danger, he continued to practice and live out his religious convictions, providing spiritual support to others and refusing to renounce his beliefs.

Tragically, on 28 September 1936, in MoiÖ, Barcelona, Spain, Blessed Josep Casas Juliá was martyred for his faith. He faced persecution and was martyred because of his unwavering dedication to Christ and the Church. His martyrdom serves as a testament to his strong faith and unwavering commitment to God.

In recognition of his martyrdom, Pope John Paul II declared the martyrdom of Blessed Josep Casas Juliá on 22 June 2004. This declaration acknowledged his heroic virtue and his ultimate sacrifice for the sake of his faith. Later, on 28 October 2007, Pope Benedict XVI beatified him, raising him to the rank of the blessed. This beatification ceremony was a solemn recognition of his sanctity and the recognition of his intercession before God.

Blessed Josep Casas Juliá is remembered and venerated on 28 September each year, the anniversary of his death. His life serves as an inspiration and example of steadfast faith, even in the face of great adversity.
