Beato José Clavería Mas

Blessed Josep Clavería Mas, also known as Josep Clavería Mas, was a member of the Claretians and a martyr of the Spanish Civil War. He was born on 29 August 1875 in Vic, Barcelona, Spain. Josep Clavería Mas professed on 3 November 1901, dedicating his life to serving God and spreading the teachings of the Catholic Church.

During the tumultuous period of the Spanish Civil War, Josep Clavería Mas remained steadfast in his faith and commitment to his religious vocation. Unfortunately, his unwavering devotion came at a great cost. On 5 September 1936, he was tragically shot in Terrasa, Barcelona, Spain, becoming one of the many victims of the religious persecution during that time.

Blessed Josep Clavería Mas is revered as a martyr for his courage in the face of adversity and his refusal to renounce his religious beliefs. His feast day is celebrated on 5 September, and he is also honored on 1 February as one of the 109 Spanish Claretian Martyrs.

Recognition of his martyrdom and sanctity came with the declaration of veneration on 21 December 2016 by Pope Francis. A year later, on 21 October 2017, Pope Francis beatified Blessed Josep Clavería Mas. The beatification ceremony took place at the Basilica of Sagrada Familia in Barcelona, Spain, and was presided over by Archbishop Angelo Amato.
