Beato José Luis Raga Nadal

Blessed Josep Lluis Raga Nadal, also known as Brother Eufrosí Maria, was a member of the Carmelites of the Ancient Observance and a martyr of the Spanish Civil War. He was born on 28 December 1913 in Ulldecona, Tarragona, Spain. At a young age, he displayed a deep devotion to God and a strong desire to dedicate his life to the service of others.

In pursuit of this calling, Josep Lluis Raga Nadal joined the Carmelites of the Ancient Observance, a religious order known for its commitment to contemplative prayer and austerity. He embraced the teachings of Saint Teresa of Avila and Saint John of the Cross, two prominent figures in the Carmelite tradition, and sought to embody their spirituality.

During the turbulent years of the Spanish Civil War, religious persecution was rampant, and many believers faced persecution and martyrdom for their faith. Sadly, Josep Lluis Raga Nadal fell victim to this violence. On 6 October 1936, in Barcelona, Spain, he was martyred for his unwavering commitment to his Catholic faith.

The life of Blessed Josep Lluis Raga Nadal is marked by his deep love for God and his dedication to the Carmelite order. His unyielding faith and his willingness to sacrifice his life for the sake of his beliefs serve as an inspiration to all. Pope Benedict XVI recognized the sanctity and martyrdom of Josep Lluis Raga Nadal, declaring him venerable on 26 June 2006. Furthermore, he beatified him on 28 October 2007, acknowledging his heroic virtue and his willingness to lay down his life for Christ.
