Beato José Rabasa Betanachs

Blessed Josep Rabasa Betanachs, also known as Blessed Josep Rabasa, was born on July 26, 1862, in the small town of Noves, Lleida, in Spain. Not much is known about his early life, but he eventually found his calling as a cook at the Salesian house in Sarria, located in Barcelona, Spain.

In 1892, Josep joined the Salesians as a co-adjutor brother, dedicating himself to a life of service within the religious community. He continued to fulfill his duties in the kitchen of the Salesian house in Sarria, providing nourishment for his fellow Salesians and the people they served.

For many years, Josep dedicated himself selflessly to his work as a cook, serving his community with humility and devotion. However, as he grew older, his health began to decline, forcing him to slow down and eventually give up his role in the kitchen.

Tragedy struck Spain with the outbreak of the Spanish Civil War, a period of intense social and political strife. During this tumultuous time, Josep found himself called to assist the wounded in the Salesian infirmary. Despite the dangers and the risk to his own life, he faithfully tended to the wounded, providing comfort and care to those in need.

However, Josep's steadfast faith and commitment to his Catholic beliefs ultimately led to his martyrdom. In the midst of the civil war, he was arrested for his unwavering devotion to his faith, refusing to renounce his Catholicism even in the face of persecution and death. On August 4, 1936, Josep Rabasa Betanachs was executed for his steadfast loyalty to his religious convictions.

Blessed Josep Rabasa Betanachs is remembered and venerated as one of the Martyred Salesians of Valencia, Catalunya, and Aragón. His feast day is commemorated on both August 4th and September 22nd, along with the other Martyred Salesians. His beatification took place on March 11, 2001, by Pope John Paul II, who recognized his martyrdom and affirmed his status as a blessed within the Catholic Church.
