Biografía

Blessed Josep Vidal Balsells, also known as Blessed Josep Vidal Balsells i Formiga, was born on 5 December 1908 in Sant Coloma de Queralt, Vic, Barcelona, Spain. He was a devoted member of the Claretians, a religious congregation founded by St. Anthony Mary Claret in 1849. As a Claretian, he dedicated his life to the service of God and the Church.

During the turbulent times of the Spanish Civil War, Blessed Josep Vidal Balsells fearlessly lived out his faith, even in the face of immense persecution. He was known for his steadfast commitment to his religious vows and his unwavering belief in Jesus Christ. Despite the dangers prevalent at that time, he continued to serve the people faithfully, offering them spiritual guidance and support.

Tragically, on 22 August 1936, Blessed Josep Vidal Balsells was martyred for his faith in Navés, Lleida, Spain. Alongside 109 other Claretian brothers who were also martyred during the Spanish Civil War, he bore witness to his unwavering trust in God, even in the face of extreme violence and hatred.

Blessed Josep Vidal Balsells was beatified on 21 October 2017 by Pope Francis, in a ceremony held at the Basilica of Sagrada Familia in Barcelona, Spain. This beatification was a testament to his heroic virtue and his willingness to sacrifice his life for the sake of his faith.

Today, Blessed Josep Vidal Balsells is venerated as a saintly figure, and his feast days are celebrated on 22 August and 1 February, along with the other 109 Spanish Claretian Martyrs. The Catholic faithful admirably remember him for his courage, commitment, and selflessness in the face of persecution.

Through his life and martyrdom, Blessed Josep Vidal Balsells continues to serve as an inspiration to all believers, reminding them of the importance of faith, perseverance, and unwavering love for God.
