Biografía
Blessed Joseph Oriol Isern Massó, also known as Joseph Oriol Isern Massó, was born on 16 June 1909 in Villanueva y Geltr√∫, Barcelona, Spain. At the age of 20, he joined the Missionaries of the Sacred Heart, demonstrating a strong dedication to his faith and calling. After several years of rigorous preparation and spiritual formation, Joseph was ordained as a priest in 1933.
Shortly after his ordination, Father Joseph was assigned to serve in Canet de Mar, a town in Spain. While there, he passionately worked to spread the teachings of the Catholic Church and ministered to the spiritual needs of the local community. His steadfast commitment to his vocation quickly earned him the respect and admiration of those he served.
During the turbulent period of the Spanish Civil War, Father Joseph, along with countless other religious individuals, became a target of persecution due to his unwavering faith. On 29 September 1936, in a tragic act of violence, he was machine-gunned to death at a ruined house near the Pont de Ser in Seriñá, Girona, Spain. Members of the Communist militia carried out this act of martyrdom.
The remains of Blessed Joseph were initially buried in a mass grave located nearby. However, on 30 March 1940, his relics were re-interred in a niche in the cemetery of Canet de Mar, Spain, where he had once passionately ministered.
In recognition of his courage and faithfulness, Pope Francis declared the martyrdom of Joseph Oriol Isern Massó on 8 July 2016, a significant step towards his eventual beatification. The beatification ceremony took place on 6 May 2017 in the Cathedral of Santa Maria, Girona, Spain, and was presided over by Cardinal Angelo Amato.
Today, Blessed Joseph Oriol Isern Massó is venerated as a martyr of the Catholic Church, commemorated on his feast day on 29 September. Through his life and death, he leaves a profound and enduring legacy of devotion and sacrifice, inspiring believers to remain steadfast in their faith even in the face of adversity.
