Beato Juan de San Domingo

Blessed Juan of San Domenico, also known as Juan Martinez y Cid, was a Dominican priest and martyr, revered for his unwavering faith and dedication to his religious calling. He was born in Manzanal de los Infantes, Zamora, Spain, and lived during the 16th and 17th centuries.

Juan joined the Dominican Order, known for its commitment to preaching and evangelization, where he fervently studied theology and philosophy. His dedication and deep understanding of Catholic teachings caught the attention of his fellow brethren and superiors, who recognized his potential for leadership.

In 1613, Juan decided to embark on a missionary journey to spread the Catholic faith overseas. Motivated by a strong sense of duty and an unwavering desire to serve God, he set sail for the lands of the Far East, eventually arriving in Japan. The country at that time was characterized by strict restrictions on Christian missionaries due to political and social reasons.

Juan's zeal for evangelization led him to persevere despite the risks involved. He knew that practicing and preaching the Catholic faith in Japan would expose him to persecution and potential martyrdom. Nonetheless, he chose to continue with his mission, traveling from village to village, spreading the word of God while providing spiritual guidance and support to the local Christian communities.

However, his missionary work in Japan would ultimately lead to his arrest and imprisonment. On March 19, 1618, Juan of San Domenico was apprehended in Suz√∫ta, Omura, Nagasaki, and incarcerated for his unwavering commitment to his faith. Despite enduring physical and emotional suffering during his imprisonment, he remained resolute in his devotion to God, inspiring those around him with his unwavering faith and unwavering courage.

Blessed Juan of San Domenico is venerated as a martyr for the Catholic faith. His martyrdom exemplifies his commitment to Christ and his unwavering loyalty to the Church. Pope Pius IX recognized his sacrifice, decreeing his martyrdom on February 26, 1866. Blessed Juan was later beatified by Pope Pius IX on May 7, 1867, acknowledging his sanctity and his status as a model of steadfast faith and devotion.

Today, the feast day of Blessed Juan of San Domenico is celebrated on May 19, commemorating his martyrdom. Additionally, some calendars also recognize his feast day on March 19. Furthermore, as one of the 205 Martyrs of Japan, he is also honored on September 10.
