Beato Juan Senosiaín Zugasti

Blessed Juan Senosiaín Zugasti was a devout Catholic and member of the Claretians. He was born on May 15, 1911, in Guirguillano, Navarra, a province in northern Spain.

During the turbulent period of the Spanish Civil War, his faith was tested. He courageously stood up against the religious persecution that unfolded during that time. As a member of the Claretians, a religious congregation founded by Saint Anthony Mary Claret, he carried out his ministry with a deep sense of devotion and commitment.

Tragically, his unwavering faith ultimately led to his martyrdom. On October 19, 1936, at the young age of 25, he was executed in Mas Claret, Sant Pere dels Arquells, Lleida, Spain, by those who sought to extinguish the Catholic faith. His martyrdom serves as a powerful testimony to his strong beliefs and his willingness to sacrifice his own life for the sake of Christ and the Church.

In recognition of his heroic virtue and martyrdom, He was venerated by Pope Francis on December 21, 2016, who issued a decree of martyrdom in his honor. This veneration acknowledges him as a model of faith and devotion for Catholics worldwide.

Further acknowledging his remarkable life, he was beatified by Pope Francis on October 21, 2017, in a solemn ceremony held at the Basilica of Sagrada Familia in Barcelona, Spain. The beatification Mass was presided over by Archbishop Angelo Amato, representing the Holy Father. This significant event celebrated his sanctity and his status as a martyr for the Catholic faith.

Blessed Juan Senosiaín Zugasti's feast days are observed on October 19 and February 1, as part of the commemoration of the 109 Spanish Claretian Martyrs. These days serve as reminders of his courageous testimony of faith and the ultimate sacrifice he made for his beliefs.
