Beata Juana María Condesa Lluch

Blessed Juana Maria Condesa Lluch, also known as Joanna Maria Condesa Lluch, was born on 30 March 1862 in Valencia, Spain, into a wealthy and pious family. From a young age, she displayed a deep devotion to the Holy Eucharist and Our Lady, along with a strong desire to serve others.

Juana received an excellent education, both secular and Christian, which helped nurture her spiritual growth. As she matured, her prayer life intensified, and she felt a resounding call to religious life. In addition to her personal vocation, Juana felt compelled to address the plight of factory workers who suffered under dehumanizing and life-threatening conditions during the Industrial Revolution of the 19th century.

In 1884, Juana approached Cardinal Antolín Monescillo, the archbishop of Valencia, seeking permission to establish a religious congregation dedicated to serving the needs of these factory workers and their families. Initially, Cardinal Monescillo rejected her request, considering her too young for such a responsibility. However, Juana's determination and genuine concern eventually persuaded him to grant her permission.

With the support of Cardinal Monescillo, Juana opened a shelter that provided both material and spiritual assistance to the suffering factory workers. Recognizing the importance of education, particularly for the children of these families, Juana soon established a school dedicated to their education. As time passed, other young women were inspired by her work and joined her in serving the community. These women formed the foundation of the Congregation of the Handmaids of the Immaculate Conception, Protectress of Workers, which Juana founded in Valencia.

The Congregation, which primarily consists of teachers, spiritual directors, and protectors of the poor, especially young working women, received diocesan approval in 1892. Temporary papal approval was granted by Pope Pius XI on 14 April 1937, and definitive approval followed on 27 January 1947 by Pope Pius XII.

Blessed Juana Maria Condesa Lluch lived a life dedicated to service, selflessness, and social justice. Her tireless efforts to improve the lives of factory workers, especially their education and spiritual well-being, earned her a reputation as a compassionate and transformative figure in her community.

Juana's life was marked by her unwavering commitment to her religious calling and her deep love for God and humanity. She passed away on 16 January 1916 in Valencia, Spain, at the age of 53, due to natural causes. Her legacy continues to inspire and her holiness recognized, as she was venerated by Pope John Paul II on 7 July 1997, who declared her heroic in virtue. Later, on 23 March 2003, Pope John Paul II beatified her as a testament to her sanctity and exemplary life.
