Biografía

Blessed Lorenzo Salvi, also known as Lorenzo Maria of Saint Francis Xavier, was born on 30 October 1782 in Rome, Italy. He studied at the Collegio Romano in Rome, where his fellow classmates included Saint Gaspare del Bufalo and the future Pope Gregory XVI. During his time at the college, he was deeply influenced by the work and preaching of Saint Vincent Mary Strambi.

In 1801, Lorenzo joined the Passionist Order as a novice at Monte Argentario and made his profession on 20 November 1802. He was ordained a priest on 29 December 1805. However, he faced numerous challenges and obstacles in his religious vocation due to political events. For seven years, his religious house and all the members in it were suppressed by order of Napoleon.

Once Lorenzo was able to return fully to his vocation, he dedicated himself to preaching missions and promoting devotion to the Passion. He possessed a deep personal devotion to the Child Jesus. Lorenzo served as the Rector of the Passionist Generalate in Rome, with his vice-rector being Blessed Dominic Barberi. Despite his administrative responsibilities, he spent most of his days on the road, preaching missions and sharing the message of Christ.

On 12 June 1856, Blessed Lorenzo Salvi passed away in Capranica, Viterbo, Italy, due to natural causes. He was laid to rest in the Passionist Church of Saint Angelo, Vetralla, Viterbo. His life and virtues were recognized by the Catholic Church, and on 8 February 1988, Pope John Paul II declared his heroic virtues, venerated him as Blessed. On 1 October 1989, Pope John Paul II beatified him, acknowledging his holiness and sanctity.

Blessed Lorenzo Salvi's life is exemplary in his dedication to preaching the gospel and promoting devotion to the Passion of Christ. His unwavering faith and commitment to his vocation despite the challenges he faced serve as an inspiration to all Catholics.
