Biografía

Blessed Lucas Martín Puente, also known as Brother Anastasio Lucas, was a devout member of the Brothers of the Christian Schools. He was born on September 20, 1908, in Castroceniza, a town located in Burgos, Spain. Lucas dedicated his life to the service of God and his fellow humans, exemplifying the values of faith, education, and compassion.

As a member of the Brothers of the Christian Schools, Lucas was involved in providing education and spiritual guidance to young people. The religious congregation, also known as the De La Salle Brothers, was founded by Saint John Baptist de La Salle and focused on evangelization through education.

During the tumultuous times of the Spanish Civil War, which raged from 1936 to 1939, Lucas' commitment to his faith was tested as the Catholic Church faced persecution. Despite the threats and dangers, Lucas continued to fulfill his duty as a Brother, providing solace, education, and support to those in need.

Tragically, on September 19, 1936, Lucas Martín Puente became a martyr for his faith. He was executed in Tarragona, Spain, a city known for its intense clashes during the civil war. Lucas, like many other religious figures and faithful individuals of the time, faced persecution and violence solely because of his unwavering commitment to Catholicism.

Lucas's steadfastness in the face of adversity and his ultimate sacrifice reflect the strength and courage of his faith. His martyrdom became a testament to his unwavering dedication to God and his belief in the power of education and spiritual guidance.

Recognition of Blessed Lucas Martín Puente's martyrdom came on June 28, 2012, when Pope Benedict XVI proclaimed his veneration. This recognition from the Church acknowledged Lucas's holy life and the ultimate sacrifice he made for his beliefs. Pope Francis subsequently beatified him on October 13, 2013. The beatification ceremony took place in Tarragona, allowing the faithful to celebrate and honor the memory of this devoted servant of God.

Today, Blessed Lucas Martín Puente serves as an inspiration to those facing persecution for their faith and those involved in the field of education. His life and martyrdom remind us of the vital importance of dedicating ourselves to the service of others and remaining steadfast in our religious convictions, regardless of the challenges we face. The memory of Brother Anastasio Lucas continues to live on as a shining example of faith, virtue, and selflessness.
