Blessed Luigi Carrara, Giovanni Didonè, Vittorio Faccin and Albert Joubert

The cause concerns three Xaverian missionaries, two priests and a religious, and a diocesan priest, killed at Baraka and Fizi in the Democratic Republic of the Congo on 28 November 1964 during the Mulelist rebellion. After independence in 1960 the country passed through a turbulent transition; Patrice Lumumba was executed in 1961, and in 1963 Pierre Mulele returned from ideological and military training in China to raise a revolt against the government of Léopoldville and against every European presence. The insurgents took the name Simba, Swahili for lions. While Europeans and most Catholic and Protestant missionaries left the Congo, the Xaverians decided to stay. Luigi Carrara, born at Cornale di Pradalunga near Bergamo in 1933, entered the Xaverians in 1947, was ordained in 1961 and sent the next year to Baraka.

Giovanni Didonè, born at Rosà near Vicenza in 1930, entered in 1950, was ordained in 1958 and sent to Fizi. Vittorio Faccin, born at Villaverla in 1934, entered in 1950, professed in 1952 and was sent to Baraka in 1959. Albert Joubert was born at Saint Louis de Mrumbi-Moba in 1908.
