Beato Luis Cabrera Sotelo

Blessed Luis Cabrera Sotelo, also known as Luís Barrero, was a devout member of the Franciscan Friars Minor (Observants) and a dedicated priest. Born on 6 September 1574 in Seville, Spain, he grew up in a time of great religious tension, as the Protestant Reformation challenged the authority of the Catholic Church. These circumstances would shape his faith and ultimately lead him to martyrdom.

Ordained as a priest, Luis Cabrera Sotelo felt a strong calling to serve as a missionary in Japan, where the Catholic faith was met with both acceptance and severe persecution. He embarked on his journey to Japan with determination and zeal, arriving in the country during the early 17th century.

Despite the constant threat to his own safety, Luis Cabrera Sotelo fearlessly evangelized and ministered to the Japanese people, particularly in the region of Omura, Nagasaki. He preached the Gospel and provided spiritual guidance to those who sought it, all the while knowing that his work put him at great risk. The local authorities at the time were hostile towards Christianity and sought to eradicate it from Japan.

On 25 August 1624, Luis Cabrera Sotelo's dedication to his faith put him in the path of persecution. He was arrested and ultimately condemned to death for his refusal to renounce his Catholic beliefs. The Japanese authorities cruelly burned him alive as a martyr for the faith. His sacrifice, alongside hundreds of others, has solidified his place among the 205 Martyrs of Japan, whose feast day is commemorated on 10 September. Additionally, he is celebrated as one of the Franciscan Martyrs of Japan on 22 May.

Blessed Luis Cabrera Sotelo's extraordinary commitment to Christ and his unwavering determination to spread the Catholic faith in the face of persecution make him a source of inspiration for believers worldwide. His life continues to serve as a testament to the enduring faith and strength of the martyrs who sacrificed everything for their religious convictions.

Blessed Luis Cabrera Sotelo was venerated by the Catholic Church on 26 February 1866, when Pope Blessed Pius IX issued a decree recognizing his martyrdom. On 7 May 1867, Pope Pius IX beatified him, granting him the title of "Blessed" in acknowledgment of his virtuous life and martyrdom. Even though there is no specific representation associated with him, his legacy lives on through the countless faithful who look to him as an intercessor and source of spiritual strength.
