Early life
Luis Obdulio Arroyo Navarro, born in 1950, came from Quiriguá, in the territory that came under the care of Father Tullio.[1] He had always kept close to the Lord, often attending the parish and offering himself for every service the priests needed.[1] He served Mass, set up the crib at Christmas, helped organise the celebrations of Holy Week and involved his family in prayers.[1] All this had helped keep him away from alcohol, a scourge that afflicted many young men of his generation.[1] He also put his job as a driver for the municipality of Los Amates at the service of others, and it was not unusual to see him accompany missionaries for part of the way through the forest to the most remote villages.[1]
Vocation and martyrdom
He got on well with Father Tullio from the start, and through this meeting he joined the Third Order of Saint Francis.[1] When the situation worsened and Father Tullio was threatened with death, his family asked him not to accompany him any more; he answered: "I am not afraid, why should I withdraw from parish service? If I must die beside the fathers, I consider it a grace".[1] Despite his family's warnings about the danger he ran in accompanying the parish priests, he preferred to stay beside them, faithful to the service he had freely taken on.[1] On 1 July 1981 he was killed together with his parish priest, Father Tullio Maruzzo, as they were returning home after a pastoral service.[1] He was beatified on 27 October 2018 under Pope Francis.[1]
