Biografía

Blessed Luis Suárez Velasco, also known as Luis Suárez of Almagro, was born on September 22, 1897, in Pel√∫gano, Aller, Asturias, Spain.

At the age of 20, Luis joined the Dominican Order in Almagro, Spain, in 1917. He dedicated himself to the study of theology and philosophy, seeking to deepen his understanding of his Catholic faith. After years of formation and spiritual growth, Luis made his solemn profession on October 17, 1920, committing himself entirely to the service of God and the Church.

Recognized for his intellect and piety, Luis Suárez Velasco was ordained a priest on February 10, 1924. He spent the next years working diligently, preaching and teaching the Gospel, and providing spiritual guidance to those in need. His commitment to his vocation and his compassionate demeanor earned him respect and admiration from his peers and the faithful.

Tragically, during the Spanish Civil War, which erupted in 1936, Luis found himself in a time of great turmoil and persecution against the Catholic Church. Despite the dangers and threats against his own life, he remained steadfast in his faith and continued to fulfill his priestly duties with unwavering devotion.

On August 14, 1936, Father Luis Suárez Velasco courageously embraced martyrdom for the sake of his faith. He was martyred in El Picado, a place in Almagro, Ciudad Real, Spain. His unwavering loyalty to Christ, even in the face of imminent danger, is a testimony to his deep love for the Lord and his commitment to the Church.

Recognizing the sacrifice and holiness of Luis Suárez Velasco, Pope Francis proclaimed him as blessed on December 11, 2019, with a decree of martyrdom. His beatification, the formal recognition of his sanctity, may be expected in the future.

The life of Blessed Luis Suárez Velasco serves as an inspiration to all Christians, reminding us of the importance of remaining faithful to our beliefs, even in challenging and hostile circumstances. His memory continues to be celebrated on August 14, reminding us of his exemplary witness and inviting us to emulate his deep faith and commitment to Christ.
